Based in Stratford, Ontario, the Stratford Festival is one of the world’s foremost repertory theatre companies. It operates year round, presenting a season of about a dozen plays each year between the months of April and November, a rich stream of digital content and hundreds of Forum events, designed to deepen understanding of the plays. For every person a theatregoer sees on our stages, we have seven people working behind the scenes, some of the world’s most dedicated and experienced arts workers. At this time we are undergoing a culture shift to support anti-racism and anti-oppression and ensure a respectful, equitable and inclusive environment in which all staff, artists and audience members can feel a true sense of belonging.

Artistic Associate, Casting (six month contract, subject to extension)

The Festival plans to expand the circle of artistic perspectives contributing to identifying, auditioning and casting artists for all areas of our work, which includes our annual repertory season of plays and musicals, the Meighen Forum, digital programming, the Laboratory, the Foerster Bernstein New Play Development Program, the Birmingham Conservatory for Classical Theatre, and education programs for both professional artists and for teachers and students.  We are seeking candidates from identities and communities that have been historically underrepresented at the Festival, with a comprehensive knowledge of the Canadian theatre community.

Responsibilities:

·         With the casting director, cast all of the Festival’s programming, including new work development and the Birmingham Conservatory, with an emphasis on amplifying voices of IBPOC and other equity-seeking groups

·         Participate in education, training, research and development initiatives with a focus on outreach to identities and communities underrepresented at the Festival

·         Arrange and participate in auditions, workshops, readings, etc., including creating casting breakdowns in accordance with applicable union requirements and Festival policies

·         Participate in season planning and advise with respect to the development and implementation of creative priorities and inclusive practice

Additional assignments to be developed in discussion with applicant, which may include artistic leadership and artist development
·         Attend a broad range of performances, including plays, musicals, readings and post-secondary presentations

·         Fulfill all responsibilities with an ethic of care, respect, and generosity
 

This position will report to the Festival’s casting director Beth Russell and will be a member of the Directors’ Office, working with the Festival’s artistic team, including current artistic associates Esther Jun (Planning) and ted witzel (Laboratory), in addition to artistic director Antoni Cimolino and producer Dave Auster.

In order to accommodate applicants from a range of personal situations, the Festival will consider either full- or part-time contracts for a six month period to suit the needs of both the individual and the Festival. Although the Festival’s staff is currently working remotely, we expect that this role will combine remote work with onsite work at the Festival in Stratford, Ontario.

This position is ideally suited to mid-career artists interested in bringing their lived, living, and learned experience to the Festival while receiving training and mentorship within a national institution. Particular consideration will be given to candidates who demonstrate a passion and track record for inclusive practices and working with artists from a wide variety of backgrounds, identities, and abilities.

Qualifications:

·         Demonstrated knowledge of and strong networks in the Canadian acting community, as a casting director, director, curator, talent agent, actor, etc.

·         Demonstrated awareness of diversity in all its facets including, but not limited to, racial, cultural, ethnic, religious, gender, gender expression, age, sexual orientation and differing abilities that make us unique

·         Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task and demonstrate grace and kindness under pressure

Compensation: based on $50,000 to $60,000 annual full time salary; salary will be pro-rated based on contract term.
