“But Wrong Actions can lead to salvation too!”

These words catapulted me into writing “The Leaves”. I had read a Noh play about ninth-century Japanese poetess Ono No Komachi, a one- hundred- year-old, once-celebrated beauty, courtesan and poet, in which she defends her fully-lived life to Buddhist monks. I read, re-read her poems, wrote my own tanka; I imagined her inner life on the mountain where she lived in isolation, communing with spirits.

“The Leaves” is my play- in- poetry about a fiery, aged woman artist. I am Komachi grinding ink, sending sake to her lover, raging, seeking redemption. The only set is the kimono I wear. An onstage musician plays percussion. All is poetry – mine, Komachi’s * – some created live during the show.

*The poems of Ono No Komachi are taken from “The Ink Dark Moon”, translated by Jane Hirshfield with Mariko Aratani.
